You’ve put in a lot of effort in planning for open enrollment, so verify that your message is getting to your employees by using the best communication channels for your employees. Find which communication option works best for your employee, email, employee portal, videos, workshops. Use these channels and make company announcements and send messages to individual employees and employee groups.
Don’t forget to follow up with employees after the enrollment period has passed to make sure they’re getting the most out of their benefits.
What did and didn’t work for you last year? Learn from what did and didn’t work in the past, by asking yourself these key questions. What were the most frequently asked questions concerning the enrollment process by the employees? Which benefits confused employees the most?
Learn from these areas and think of ways to improve the enrollment process. Create goals based on these areas: Enroll X amount of employees in the retirement plan, or have X% participate in the information session. Then start strategizing your communication process accordingly.
Upgrade or Update Your HR Technology
Choose how you are going to administer the enrollment process. Does your current HCM system provide a comprehensive set of tools to manage and control multiple plan options, complex eligibility rules, and other unique plan features? If not, it might be time to upgrade your technology.

Stay Current with Policy Changes
The US health care system is constantly changing. Make sure your employees are positioned to get the most out of the enrollment period by reviewing important changes to the enrollment process or to the benefits.
Keep your employees aware of the fee of not having health insurance and how this will affect them. The 2018 totals haven’t been announced yet but last year’s data is available and can be used as a reference.
Inform Your Support Team
Instruct your team of leaders, managers and HR team on key topics, frequently asked questions and discussion topics about open enrollment. These members of your staff can be a resource to help with employee questions. Work with your team to consistently communicate a clear message about open enrollment. Consistency from your team will enable your employees to have a successful open enrollment.
Also, you can use information sessions or bring in an expert to communicate early and to answer the tough questions.
